IMPORTANT ! 🔴 A LITTLE HISTORY The origin of the name ‘Melba’ came from the great Australian soprano, Dame Nellie Melba who adopted this stage name in honour of the Australian city of Melbourne (her real name was Helen Porter Mitchell). Since her debut in Brussels in 1887, she had become a world operatic figure and her ‘brand’ was ripe for commercialisation. With regular appearances at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, throughout the first decade of the new century, her name would have been just as recognizable as that other well known opera singer of the time,. The great Dame Nellie MelbaThere have been claims that Jones was a personal friend of Nellie Melba but this is unlikely because Melba’s first Chicago performance was not until a year after the company was formed. But like Helena Rubinstein, who also claimed to have known Melba, (and who probably did during her years living in Melbourne, Australia) there was some value in Jones associating his product with such a famous personality. With the Melba name and the lavender and gold packaging of the powder boxes the Melba products would have been both distinctive and appealing. It is worth noting that early packages of Melba face powder did include a portrait of Nellie Melba but later advertising copy is conspicuous by Nellie Melba’s absence suggesting that the diva did not approve of her face being used in this way. Face powder was one of Melba’s earliest products with the first order of 100 lavender-coloured boxes being packed personally by Frank Jones. In those early years it was a small, intimate, concern that operated from the basement of a modest cottage property on Prairie Avenue. Basement cosmetic production was not uncommon in those times and even Ruth Maurer, who founded Marinello, started in exactly the same way. There is evidence of Melba ‘complexion aids’ being advertised as early as 1909 with products including Melba Skin Cleaner, Melbaline Face Powder and Melba Rose Blush. Face powder and rouge were packaged in cardboard containers with no evidence of metal cases used in those early years. Jones’ first trademark was a line called ‘Lov’Me’ which was created in March 1913 and had as its main product a face cream. At the time ‘Lov’Me’ was launched Jones could not have anticipated the success of his face cream. Equally, he could not possibly have foreseen that it would be both the basis for the company’s financial prosperity and, ironically, also its eventual destruction.
