IN ONE OF THE LIGHTER MOMENTS at dinner with Nikita Khrushchev I pointed toward one of his guests and said: “He’d make a successful capitalist. If you want to get rid of him, let him come to America. Don’t send him to Siberia.” The guest laughed and said to Khrushchev, who was smiling: “You can’t send me to Siberia. Those days are gone forever.” I thought of Joseph Stalin, who would never have permitted a joke about so serious a subject, and I relaxed, at least for the moment, since the old-time terror had gone. But there was a question in the back of my mind. Is the peace of the world more secure because a smiling Khrushchev, and not a grim Stalin, is the Soviet ruler? The answer, I suspect, is no. A comparison of the two men may provide some of the reasons. When I was American Ambassador to Moscow I saw a great deal of Stalin, perhaps more than any other Western diplomat. During my recent visit to the Soviet Union I talked to Khrushchev sev- eral times, dined with him and had two extensive discussions with him. The two leaders have much in common but there are a number of important differences. In backgrounds there is little to choose. How many of you are striding about in colored slacks, multihued Madras sports jackets, gaily figured cravats and sports shirts? How many of you are buying not one but two or three different kinds of after- shave lotion? Every now and then, when I am thinking about these matters, I try to imagine what will happen on March 16, 1984. If we make it through to then, there is going to be a huge celebration given by the Amalgamated Wigmakers of America. When Leopold Stokowski and Gloria Vanderbilt fought for the custody of their children, the scene was the courtroom where she was the center of a similar battle 25 years ago ———– 11 ———– ONE OF THE STRANGEST legal battles of 1959 began in May, in New York Supreme Court. The venerable Leopold Stokowski, the 77-year-old ma- estro, sued his ex-wife, the 35-year-old rich and beautiful Gloria Vanderbilt, for custody of his two sons by her. By order of Judge Edgar Nathan, the opposing arguments were heard in secrecy. The courtroom was closed to the public. Newspaper reporters were barred. Even the portholes in the heavy brass-studded swinging doors were screened with brown paper. The huge air cooled courtroom seemed almost deserted, for only law- yers, clerks, courtroom stenographers and witnesses were there. And the is- sues of the combat-the children, Stan- islaus, 9, and Christopher, 7-never came to court. All those who came into court were sworn to silence. They were faith- ful to the oath: not a sentence of the testimony leaked into print. Because of the hush-hush the epi- sode may have seemed like just another one of those all- too – common custody battles, the tragic by-product of divorce and its bitterness, a bitterness in which ———– 11 ———– the children become a pretext for hate- fulness between the divorced parents. But it was more than that-at least for Gloria Vanderbilt: for her it was an old ordeal which she had to live through, but live through in a new way. The 1959 custody hearing was a reflec- tion in a distorted mirror of another custody trial with a different cast of characters and a different outcome in which Gloria, 25 years previously, had been the issue. At all costs, Gloria had decided this year that there must be no public scan- dals. The young boys must not be brought into court to testify whether they wanted to live with their mother or their father. I’ve been reliably in- formed that if maestro Stokowski or his lawyers had insisted on a public hearing in the newspaper spotlight, Gloria would have given up her legal rights to the children. She was only 10 years old when she went through the ordeal of scandal anda publicity in the same courtroom. The contenders, then, had not been a mother and a father.
