Since then, commemorative coins have been issued nearly every year to celebrate famous American people, places, events, and institutions. The wide range of subject matters and the diversity of designs make commemorative coins popular among collectors. In 2018, the U.S. Mint released the Breast Cancer Awareness $5 Gold commemorative coin to recognize the many Americans who are impacted by the disease and the effort to prevent it through research. This coin which is struck at the West point mint is the first gold coin in the U.S. Mint’s history with a pink hue. The obverse designed by Emily Damstra features two women presumably a mother and daughter. The older woman has her hands crossed on her chest and her eyes closed while the younger woman, with a scarf on her head, has her left hand over her chest and her right hand raised in a fist. A butterfly appears above the two women in the background. Also included on the obverse are the inscriptions “LIBERTY”, “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “2018” as well as the “W” mint mark. The reverse also designed by Damstra depicts a Tiger Swallowtail butterfly in flight, a symbol of hope. Surrounding the butterfly are the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “FIVE DOLLARS”, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “BREAST CANCER AWARENESS. This two coin set includes both the proof and mint state 2018 W $5 Gold Breast Cancer Awareness coins. Both coins have been certified perfect 70 by PCGS with the First Day of Issue designation.
