eBay Antique Emery Richmond FRUIT COOLER W TOP c1860 FLOW BLUE/GILT Burslem England Genuine Victorian art piece which is an outstanding example of the Victorian sensibility and utility applied to magnificently decorated items. VERY RARE PIECE- Museum Quality collectible genuine circa 1860s. Gorgeous VERY FINE raised flow blue enamel [it is feelable] scenes of chrysanthemum flowers and Victorian designs cover the entire piece. Sponged gold accents cover the piece, with gold trim at rims and on handles. 2 oversized round handles. This piece is in beautiful condition. Fully marked on underside. Top perforated bowl lid easily lifts out for cleaning etc. Size: approx. 10″ high and 12″ wide from handle to handle. 9.75″ wide opening to bottom piece. Top perforated bowl lid is 10.5″ wide x approx. 3″ deep and fits over the top of bottom piece at rim. Clover-shaped opening in top bowl is approx. 2.5″ x 2.5″ Charming and unusual shape is Asian inspired, as was the rage in the Victorian era. This piece would have been used as a classic ‘fruit cooler’ or ‘fruit chiller’ for a quite wealthy household. Ice or ice water would be placed in the bottom piece and then fruit would be placed in the top bowl, over the top of the cooling base. As fruit developed condensation it would drain through the clover-shaped hole in the top basin. This hole would also allow cold air to rise up to chill the fruit. Quite ingenious. The 2 handles on the sides were necessary as the weight of this piece when in use would have been substantial, as well as the coldness making it difficult to grip. It displays fantastically well and looks incredible from all sides- would make a stunning centerpiece etc. It would also make a fabulous ice bucket for a bottle of wine or champagne. If the bottle had a narrow enough neck, it may actually fit through the top bowl opening, as well This is a VERY RARE piece and in beautiful condition. Amazingly collectible The Richmond pattern is almost never seen available, let alone in this incredible large sized fruit cooler. Excellent condition- absolutely NO nicks, chips, cracks, scratches, breaks, or repairs to either piece. Piece has fine crazing to glaze normal for age which has not darkened or ‘foxed’- very minor. Also has extremely minor wear to gold rim trim normal for age- it is very much intact and bright. This is a gorgeous piece, the colors, artwork, plus the shape and design are absolutely charming. It is a true white and cobalt color, some photos give it a cream colored cast which is not on the piece. Magnificent for a collector.
