[zipedit] Amazing Spider-Man #1 1963 2x Signed by Stan Lee and STEVE DITKO! CGC 5.0. Off White Pages. Restored: All 3 edges trimmed* *I think CGC made an error here, or was at least overly critical. The book measures out just fine against other books from the time(it’s definitely not your typical all 3 edges “hack job” where the book will now fit in a Modern Age bag). I think the cover was definitely trimmed at the top and maybe the other edges as well. Probably to trim off “Marvel chipping”. It does not look like the interior was trimmed to me. Please look at the comparison pic, where I’ve compared to a similarly cut Universal grade and a typical “All 3 Edges Trimmed” butcher job. This book definitely compares more favorably to the universal graded copy. The cool thing about the cover being trimmed at the top is that you can just make out the top of some parts of the Ditko sig(match it up with the provided photos I got from the original ad when I purchased the book a few years ago). This looks to be the sister copy of the Amazing Fantasy #15 signed by Stan and Steve that sold a few years ago(see pics). Both books are dedicated to “Charles” as Stan calls him or “Charlie” as Steve calls him and the characteristics of the sigs are VERY similar, so probably from the same era(circa 1964-66) and Stan signed with a black sharpie(been around since ’64) while Steve signed with a blue ballpoint pen(and other than the trimming, both books had similar mid grades). Most seasoned collectors will be aware of just how rarely Ditko signed books so Charles/Charlie is most likely the same person. And while CGC doesn’t authenticate signatures, most seasoned collectors are also aware that if the graders have any doubt they put “name written on, etc”, however if they think the sig is authentic they state the name of the person(in this case “Stan Lee & Steve Ditko written on page 1 in marker & pen”). Beckett signature review states sigs “likely to pass full authentication”. Expedited Shipping is FREE. While these sites are useful tools when looking up current values on say, books like Amazing Spider-Man #300 and New Mutants #98, utilizing these sites to glean the value of one-of-a-kind rare items(like double covers with Mark Jewelers inserts for one example) is 100% folly. I can’t tell you how many times we have been requested to lower the price on something you cannot find anywhere else and the potential customer stating they saw “what we paid” as a reason. We are not a non-profit business, so yes, we do ask more than what we paid for the items that we sell(*GASP*). How do you place a value on something you cannot find anywhere else? One rule of thumb we use when estimating value is to look on the CGC/CBCS censuses to see how many of specific grades exist and then see what they are selling for. We will always attempt to stay under a 9.8 value for a book even if the rare feature of the book makes it harder to find than a 9.8. So, please refrain from sending offers around what you saw it on one of the analytic sites for. We probably won’t respond to the offer if you do. As we stated earlier, for popular books, those sites can be useful, however for extremely rare variants with little or no data, all those sites will do is talk you out of buying something you want.Thank you.
