This driver measures about 45 1/2″ Callaway Epic MAX LS Driver Callaway introduced a new a take on their highly-acclaimed Jailbreak technology in their 2021 Epic lineup. Through continued AI development, Jailbreak has evolved from two bars helping vertical stability in the club head to a new Jailbreak Frame that creates horizontal stability as well. The Callaway Epic MAX LS driver utilizes the new Jailbreak Frame to create more ball speed and more forgiveness in a low spin package with adjustable perimeter weighting. The Looks Coming in at a full 460cc, the Callaway Epic MAX LS driver has a larger footprint. Similar to the Epic Speed driver, the Epic MAX LS’s toe sits a little higher. I would describe the shape as a stretched out “D” with a straighter topline from address. This elongated body allows Callaway to place the center of gravity (CG) deeper in the head which raises the MOI. A higher MOI reduces the club’s inclination to twist at impact so, in theory, the club will be more forgiving and you’ll be more accurate with it. The Epic MAX LS also has a black Triaxial carbon crown. While it looks super cool, the carbon fiber has a very real functional purpose. By using Triaxial carbon throughout the club head, Callaway is able to save weight which they can strategically locate to different areas to improve forgiveness. If you look real close, there’s a nice little touch where the black topline has subtle a green-tinted metal flake to it. My pictures don’t do it justice, but it’s pretty cool in the right light and worth pointing out. How Does it Feel? The concept of Callaway’s Jailbreak technology is to make the club head more rigid so less energy is wasted in retaining its shape at impact. Instead of spending energy “returning back to form”, the energy can be transferred back into the ball for greater speeds. By using the new Jailbreak Frame, the Epic MAX LS driver definitely feels more solid and you can literally feel that sensation in your hands at impact. Pair the Jailbreak Frame with the titanium AI-designed Flash Face SS21 and you have a very precise and solid feel. You know exactly where you’re hitting the ball on the face and can really feel it jump off of the club when you catch one in its generous sweet spot. How Does it Sound? Matching the Callaway Epic MAX LS driver’s solid and precise feel is its sound. The sound is a firm crack that’s a little more open and has a little more volume to it. By no means would I say it’s a loud sound, but it’s definitely forceful. Finding the sweet spot will leave you with a nice “whop” (pronounce the “H”) at impact. The Callaway Epic MAX LS is designed to be a low launching and spinning driver with a neutral ball flight. Though the stock flight bias is neutral, the adjustable sliding perimeter weight allows you to reposition the CG to influence the shot shape. So should you want a fade bias, you can position the weight toward the toe. If you want some help drawing the ball, you can slide the weight toward the heel. As far as low launch and spin, the Epic MAX LS performed as advertised. The ball came off of the face very hot with a penetrating low bullet and tons of roll. While it’s definitely a low/low driver, it didn’t quite seem like you needed a ton of swing speed just to get the ball in the air like other low/low drivers. It was really more of a case of what fits best for your game. If low/low fits your game, then you’ll be fine. Final Thoughts – Callaway Epic MAX LS Driver The new Jailbreak Frame is a great evolution in Callaway’s Jailbreak journey. I found the Epic MAX LS driver to feel more rigid in all the right ways. It definitely felt powerful at impact and the ball really did jump off of the face. If you need help bringing the ball down off the tee, the Epic MAX LS could do the trick. If you’re a player that could use a little more launch to help get the ball in the air and carrying, the regular Epic Max driver may be a better option. Regardless, the power and control produced by the Jailbreak Frame is definitely a big step forward for Callaway and worth the upgrade from previous generations. The Speeder TR (“Tour Rated”) is designed based on the request of Tour professionals for a specific feel and maximum performance. Fujikura created an entirely new EI profile by stiffening the mid section of the shaft and providing the proper bending on Butt and Tip side. The result is a very stable, mid-low launch and low spin shaft that produces exceptional ball speed. Multi-plied hoop layers and 90-ton carbon fiber provide better stability and club head speed. TR was developed with Tour players in mind. Fujikura Tour rep was looking for a shaft profile to give the players more control and consistency. Extensive testing with Tour players took place until Fujikura Tour reps achieved the results they were looking for.
