“FISH SWISH”, 2018 ORIGINAL PENCIL SIGNED LIMITED EDITION COLOR LITHOGRAPH BY THE AMERICAN ARTIST JAMES MICHALOPOULOS (b.1951) This original limited edition color lithograph, a culinary-inspired still life table setting titled “Fish Swish”, is by the Louisiana artist James Michalopoulos who is internationally known for his “iconic” color filled textual paintings of New Orleans and Louisiana life. Amuse Bouche from Napa, California commissioned James Michalopolous to create “Fish Swish” for the bottle label art for their 2018 Proprietary Red Blend Napa Valley wine. The lithograph is signed in pencil by the artist in the margin below the image lower right: Michalopoulos and numbered in pencil in the margin below the image lower left: 580/900. Printed in France on Rives paper, the exact image size measures 33 1/2 x 25 7/8 inches, the sheet with full margins measures 39 1/2 x 30 3/16 inches. The lithograph comes unframed. PLEASE NOTE CONDITION: There is a faint handling crease in the top margin near the sheet edge center and a small crease to the edge of the sheet right side center, otherwise the lithograph is in excellent condition, bright crisp and clean with no evidence of any damage to the image. James Michalopoulos, an American painter and sculptor, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1951. He lived in Brunswick, Maine where he attended and graduated from Bowdoin College. After graduating, he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana.Michalopoulos is a self-taught artist. He observed what other artists were doing in New Orleans, specifically the artists who worked in Jackson Square. He took classes at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts and the University of New Orleans. He began working in Jackson Square as a street artist, drawing sketches of people in the square, and then later started painting the buildings and architecture of New Orleans. His oil paintings are colorful and feature “exaggerated viewpoints and skewed perspectives.” He uses palette knives in his work, which helps provide intense color and texture.Michalopoulos’ work has been shown extensively in the Unites States and abroad and is featured in numerous public and corporate collections, including Universal Studios, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the New Orleans Museum of Art.He has served as the official artist of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival six times. Michalopoulos’ collectable festival posters have featured Dr. John, Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, Fats Domino, Allen Toussaint, and Aaron Neville.Michalopoulos is a philanthropist, with a focus on supporting Habitat for Humanity.
