Spode Coffee Pot w/Lid 40 Ozs Cowslip Earthenware Ribbed Basket Weave 1942-1957 A beautiful SPODE Vertical Ribbed EARTHENWARE COFFEE POT w/LID, Striking COWSLIP Flower pattern #S.713 with Red, BLUE & Yellow Flowers on long Graceful BROWN Stems w/GREEN LEAVES on CREAM w/NO Trim, Circa 1942-1957 from Staffordshire, England DESCRIPTION: This vintage chinaware has colors that are bright and vivid on the cream background. This is on a vertically ribbed earthenware blank with brown outlining and scrollwork. The beautiful flowers with their slender brown stems and green leaves grace this ribbed mold. The lid with its deep flange sits beautifully atop the teapot. The finial of the lid is molded to be a 6 petaled flower! The basket weave is an interesting touch. CONDITION: While this coffee pot is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find no chips, nicks, rubbings, scratches, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There appears to be absolutely no wear to the vivid colors. There is only the slightest crazing that is so common on earthenware of this era. Look in the photos to see this. It is beautiful and classically decorated. DIMENSIONS: The round coffee pot handle to spout is 7 1/2″ with a maximum diameter of 4 1/2″. The height to the top of the lid in place is 8 3/4″. The pot itself is 7 1/8″ high. HISTORY/MARKS: The 37 year old Josiah Spode founded his Spode Pottery Company at Stoke-on-Trent in 1770 after having worked with many of the best potters in the Stoke-on-Trent area from the age of 16. He is credited with the development of a winning formula for making fine bone china and the perfection of blue under-glaze printing. Three of his original transferware patterns are still being produced today: Tower Blue, Willow, and Blue Italian. In 1833, Spode Pottery was sold to William Taylor Copeland and remained in the Copeland family until 1966. By 1976, the company had become part of the Royal Worcester Spode Group. Today, it is part of the Portmeirion Group and continues the production of high quality fine bone china at Stoke-on-Trent. The brown printed mark (Mark #259) on this coffee pot is identified in Robert Copeland’s Spode & Copeland Marks as used 1920-1957. The Cowslip pattern was produced from 1942-1975 making the circa for this item 1942-/1957. As collectors ourselves, we tend to be very picky and find it necessary to point out anything we see.
