This makes a total of 33 + 1 + 33 = 67 layers, hence the name “67-layer Damascus clad steel.” The lower hardness of the side steels ensures toughness and ease of sharpening, while the higher hardness of the middle steel ensures long-lasting sharpness of the blade. This steel is widely used in China for making various types of knives, and the rough patterns on the surface are a result of acid etching.
