Introduction: This bowl came into our home at the same time our complete Italian Deruta 93-Piece Dinnerware Set (see listing on this site) was collected. Although it is of a different design than our set, it was such an exquisite specimen of Deruta pottery that we scooped it up. Just to have it gracing any table in our home was a representation of our love for classic designs that have survived the ages.It can be used for fruit, vegetables, or — nothing — just alone itself an object of beauty. For years it sat on a hutch in our dining room. Occasionally a pair of sunglasses or my wife’s wallet and leather gloves would find their way into the bowl. (I recall once seeing a baby rattle in it, which, if you know my age, attests to its longevity in our family). With it’s classic dragon design and vivid Deruta colors, it just looked perfect in any room. I honestly don’t think it was ever used as a serving bowl. Could it be that it was just too beautiful to contemplate putting it to serious work? Or was it the fact that, with children always at our table, precariously passing bowls of food as my wife and I hovered over them, we didn’t want to take the chance? In any case, I can attest that it has been admired rather than used.At a time when we are attempting to downsize our hundreds of pieces of beautiful objects that we just couldn’t live without collected over our lifetime spent together, my wife and I offer it up to its next home. But I warn you: It bears not a chip or a mark, unmarred now as it was in its virgin state on the shelf at Ponte Vecchio in Beverly Hills. Proceed with caution. It deserves to stay as beautiful and breathtaking as it always was. About Deruta Pottery Deruta pottery, named after the charming Umbrian town of Deruta in central Italy, has been synonymous with artistic excellence since the 12th century. By the 15th century, Deruta reached its peak, with master artisans refining their skills to create intricate designs that reflected the creative spirit of the Renaissance. Each piece, meticulously hand-painted, became a canvas for traditional motifs such as geometric patterns, mythical creatures, and pastoral scenes, rendered in vibrant blues, greens, reds, and yellows. And with hand painting comes the knowledge that no two pieces are ever exactly alike. Each one is unique unto itself. Today, Deruta pottery is still highly sought after for its unmatched quality, and this absolutely lovely bowl reflects that storied tradition.“Raffaellesco” Design: Raffaellesco is possibly the most popular design in the Deruta pottery collection. It is named after Raphael, the Italian painter who created this decorative style for his frescoes. Although no one knows for sure, it has been said that the craftsman who created this dragon design wanted to pay tribute to the seagoing merchants who brought the pottery from the East India to Italy, which represented the groundwork for the iconic Italian craft of ceramic pottery. Before boarding their ships, the merchants would invoke the favors of the benevolent dragon, who granted them good luck and fair winds on their voyage. Hence the beautiful “puffing dragon” design, with the graceful and colorful serpents drifting along the circumference of the bowl. The Bowl Itself As I mentioned earlier, this bowl is almost too beautiful for food service. It begs to be left pristine on display, as it was in our home. I can’t tell you how many times I stopped and simply studied it. For instance, I noticed that three tiny “dots” are randomly painted over and over on the bottom of the bowl. The fact that someone painstakingly repeated that tiny pattern again and again is a testament to the care taken to create each piece of Deruta. No three groupings of dots are the same, and they must have used a minuscule brush to create the pattern. With three thick ceramic handles in a braided design, three floating dragons, three turquoise flowers and three burnt umber, the bowl is a beautiful symmetric design. The exact center of the bowl is itself a symmetrical pattern incorporating all the colors of the bowl. Bright yellow, turquoise blue, burnt umber and cobalt blue combine to form a most appealing whole. The bowl is weighty — over two pounds! — sitting firmly on a turquoise base rim. The fluted edge gives the sturdy bowl a very delicate feel — also a feature of Deruta pieces. The bottom of the bowl bears the hand-painted words “Made in Italy” and “Ponte Vecchio” (where we purchased the piece).
